Dot to Dot Drumming is a fun hands-on strategy for learning to separate sentences into words and also provides a timing cue for verbalizing a complete sentence. Learning to attend to the larger “chunks”(words) will set the foundation for later being able to manipulate the smaller “chunks” of syllables and phonemes.

Dot to Dot Drumming will assist you in teaching the skill of sentence segmentation with a twenty page set of visuals. Sentence segmentation is the ability to know when a sentence can be divided into words. This resource uses a combination of pictures and words. It puts them on top of a series of drums or recycled objects. For example, an upside down ice cream bucket.

This fun, hands-on strategy will help children learn to separate sentences into words. Dot to Dot Drumming also provides a timing cue for verbalizing a complete sentence. While you learn how to attend to the larger “chunks” (words), you will be setting the foundation for being able to manipulate the smaller “chunks” of syllables and phonemes.

You will also learn the strategy of “playing” the words in a left to right sequence. This helps provide timing cues for verbalizations and improves articulation. A large version of all visuals is included so that the sentence can be illustrated. Is the cat sitting in the basket, on the table, or under the bed?

This Dot to Dot Drumming printable has pictures and words for the following: cat, dog, mouse, chair, umbrella, box, couch, table, basket, rug, and bed.

The sentence structures contain: “The cat sat in/on/under the table,” and “I see a mouse”. Additional sentence variations are made possible by the following words: I, you, your, we, like, to, a/an, and is. You will also recieve large print word cards for students who have visual impairments or to create a duplicate sentence in front of a classroom.

As a homeschooling mom of a child on the autism spectrum, I very much appreciate this Dot-To-Dot Drumming resource. I like how easy it is to implement, that it works on several language, and literacy skills such as targeting prepositions and expanding sentences. Most of all I love how it has kept my son motivated, captured his attention and makes learning fun! Thanks for creating and sharing this wonderful resource Kathy!
